The History of the Conquest of Mexico was received extremely well, both critically and by the general public, despite Prescott's fears to the contrary. Substantial portions of all his books and correspondence were composed on this device. Eight volumes of sixteen only. Emotional detachment is my speciality.

In his Spanish histories his concern was almost exclusively with the Spanish courtiers and other aristocrats. However Liz Davies wrote that on the Labour National Executive Committee Prescott "spoke in clear, concise sentences and his point was always understandable. Emotional detachment is my speciality. Harry Thurston Peck 's account is considered academically inferior due to its essentially derivative nature.

InGeorge Ticknor published a biography based on Prescott's then-unpublished correspondence, to which the later biographers have been greatly indebted. More than a decade later he finished The History Prescotts histories book the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholicwhich enjoyed tremendous critical and popular success on both sides of the Atlantic. His colourful prose dealt with conquests, war, diplomacy, and politics—not with cultural, social, or economic themes. Prescott spent some time in Cambridgewhere he saw the manuscripts of Isaac Newton 's works, and returned to the United States in the same year.
